Plan Your First Visit
Thinking about joining us on Build Night? Here's what you can expect!
Open to All
We are a community non-profit and open to all.
There is no fee for participation.
You do not need to pre-register for Build Nights, but please add your name and contact info to our sign-in book as you enter!
Our hangars are heated and well lit. You will find them a comfortable spot on the coldest winter days thanks to in-floor heating! Restrooms are on site. Our hangars are wheel chair accessible.
How to Find Us
The Learn Build Fly Education Center is located at the Wausau Downtown Airport in Marathon County, Wisconsin. Our center consists of two hangar buildings within the airport grounds. The walk-through pedestrian gate is located just beyond the Alexander Park playground. When the flag is out, we're here: come in on!
Welcome & Tour
Our Build Nights start with a brief overview meeting. We will ask you to introduce yourself and immediately following the meeting we'll give you the grand tour. Your tour guide will show you what's happening that night, our current projects and machines, and find a place for you to dig in. Many new folks start with rib building or in our computer lab, where CAD design ends in 3D prints; learn about progress on our aircraft build; or meet new friends in the small engine area.
Safety
We are a working shop with real tools and moving machinery. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian - there are plenty of things to learn together!
Safety basics include:
-
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety glasses and hearing protection
-
Situational awareness when working on machinery with moving parts, lathes and saws.
-
Protective jackets, aprons, and gloves for activities like welding. Long pants and close toed shoes or work boots should be worn while metalworking.
-
No rough housing
-
Respect and care for people, equipment, and the facility
